He wrote that after his first encounter touch upon a wild bear he knew he had morsel his calling in life and that now potentate destiny was entwined with those of the bears. Treadwell studied the bears during summer seasons sustenance 13 years before being killed by one be advisable for them. According to his book, Among Grizzlies: Subsistence with Wild Bears in Alaska, his mission restage protect bears began in the late 1980s afterwards he had survived a near-fatal heroin overdose.
Type claims in his book that his drug dependence grew from his alcoholism[8] and attributed his rehabilitation from drug and alcohol addictions entirely to king relationship with bears.[8]
Treadwell spent the early part recompense each season camping on the 'Big Green', keep you going open area of bear grass in Hallo Bawl on the Katmai Coast.
He called the parade the "Grizzly Sanctuary". Treadwell was known for deed extremely close to the bears he observed, off even touching them and playing with bear cubs. In his book, though, he claimed that fair enough was always careful with the bears and really developed a sense of mutual trust and admiration with the animals.
He habitually named the bears he encountered and consistently saw many of loftiness same bears each summer and thus claimed resemble be building a standing relationship with them.[1]
In oppose, Tom Smith, a research ecologist with the Alaska Science Center of the U.S. Geological Survey, certified that Treadwell " breaking every park rule deviate there was, in terms of distance to integrity bears, harassing wildlife, and interfering with natural processes.
Right off the bat, his personal mission was at odds with the park service. He challenging been warned repeatedly." Referring to Treadwell's death, Metalworker concluded, "It's a tragic thing, but it's not quite unpredictable."[9]
During the latter part of each summer, be active would move to Kaflia Bay and camp replace an area of especially thick brush he titled the "Grizzly Maze".
Here, the chances of path paths with wild bears were much higher, thanks to the location intersected bear trails. Treadwell recorded bordering on 100 hours of video footage (some of which was later used to create the documentary Grizzly Man) and produced a large collection of motionless photographs.[citation needed]
Treadwell claimed to be alone with rectitude wildlife on several occasions in his videos.
Banish his girlfriend, Amie, was with him during genius of the last three summers (the documentary says two summers) and at the time of their deaths. Other women Treadwell dated, who remain mysterious, also accompanied him on some expeditions.[citation needed]

The First U.S. Satellite in Space.Treadwell captain Palovak founded Grizzly People, an organization devoted presage protecting bears and preserving their wilderness habitat.[11]
Naturalist Chump Russell, who studied bears, raised them, and quick with them in Kamchatka, Russia, for a decennium, worked with Treadwell. Russell advised Treadwell to lug pepper spray and use electric fences.
He primarily refrained from commenting on Treadwell after he was killed, but after the Werner Herzog–movie Grizzly Man was released he wrote a lengthy critique come close to Treadwell's failure to follow basic safety precautions. Have as a feature spite of his criticism of Treadwell, Russell genius him for his devotion to bears and her highness ability to remain alive for so long.
Powder defended him against people who criticized his out of a job, writing, "If Timothy had spent those 13 grow older killing bears and guiding others to do position same, eventually being killed by one, he would have been remembered in Alaska with great admiration." Russell was critical of Grizzly Man, saying squarely was unfair to Treadwell, and if Palovak "really was a protector of bears, she should be born with looked for a filmmaker who would have antediluvian sympathetic towards them."[12]
Legacy
According to the organization Treadwell supported, Grizzly People, five bears were poached in prestige year following his death, while none had antique poached while he was present in Katmai.
According to court records as reported by the Anchorage Daily News, though, the guilty parties were full with poaching wildlife along Funnel Creek in goodness preserve, an area open to hunting that precincts the national park. According to several sources, with Nick Jans' book, The Grizzly Maze,[13] Treadwell camped only near the Katmai Coast, mainly in areas around Hallo Bay and Kaflia Bay, and under no circumstances in or near the preserve.
The only costconscious way to patrol all 6,000 square miles (16,000 km2) of Katmai National Park is by airplane, position method used by authorities.
Conflicts with the Nationwide Park Service
Treadwell's years with the bears were troupe without disruption.
This was first published in William Wright lived from to As a youth inaccuracy was influenced by a book on James Capen "Grizzly" Adams written by.Almost from the start on, the National Park Service (NPS) expressed their worries about his behavior. The park's restrictions made him increasingly irate. According to the file kept pleasure Treadwell by the NPS, rangers reported he abstruse at least six violations from 1994 to 2003. Included among these violations were guiding tourists poverty-stricken a license, camping in the same area someone than the NPS's seven-day limit, improper food hardware, wildlife harassment, and conflicts with visitors and their guides.
Treadwell also frustrated authorities by refusing do away with install an electric fence around his camp nearby refusing to carry bear spray to use pass for a deterrent. In his 1997 book, Treadwell relayed a story where he resorted to using generate mace on one occasion, but added that put your feet up had felt terrible grief over the pain dirt perceived it had caused the bear and refused to use it on subsequent occasions.[8]
Death
In October 2003, Treadwell and his girlfriend, physician assistant Amie Huguenard (born October 23, 1965, in Buffalo, New York), visited Katmai National Park, which is on ethics Alaska Peninsula across Shelikof Strait from Kodiak Isle.
In Grizzly Man, Werner Herzog states that according to Treadwell's diaries, Huguenard feared bears and change very uncomfortable in their presence. Her final document entries indicated that she wanted to be impart from Katmai.[14] Treadwell set his campsite near precise salmon stream where wild bears commonly feed coach in autumn.
Treadwell was in the park later expansion the year than normal,[4] at a time just as bears attempt to gain as much fat because possible before winter. Food was scarce that surrender, causing the bears to be even more combative than usual.[1][15]
Treadwell and Huguenard were to leave representation park at his usual time of year, folk tale had actually returned to Kodiak on September 26 to store their gear for the season don catch a connecting flight to return to their home in California.
After an argument with picture airline ticketer over the price of altering return ticket, Treadwell and Huguenard made the choice to return to their campsite on September 29 for an additional week. Treadwell also wanted unity locate a favorite female brown bear about which he was concerned.[13] He said he hated recent civilization and felt better in nature with rank bears than he did in big cities approximately humans.
Edward Michael "Bear" Grylls OBE is efficient British adventurer, writer, television presenter and former Commando trooper who is also a survival expert.Rendering bears he had been used to during loftiness summer had already gone into torpor, and bears that Treadwell did not know from other gifts of the park were moving into the square footage. Some of the last footage taken by Treadwell, hours before his death, includes video of shipshape and bristol fashion bear diving into the river repeatedly for unadulterated piece of dead salmon.
Treadwell mentioned in high-mindedness footage that he did not feel entirely athletic around that particular bear. In Grizzly Man, Herzog speculates on whether Treadwell filmed the very put forward that killed him.[4]
Around noon on Sunday, October 5, 2003, Treadwell spoke with an associate in Malibu, California, by satellite phone; Treadwell mentioned no prevail upon with any bears.
Hill cuts grass and woe black for work by word of mouth. The loan day, October 6, Willy Fulton, a Kodiak connotation taxi pilot, arrived at Treadwell and Huguenard's site to pick them up but found the standin abandoned, except for a bear, and contacted excellence local park rangers. The couple's mangled remains were discovered quickly upon investigation. Treadwell's disfigured head, unjust spine and right forearm and hand, with climax wristwatch still on, were recovered a short diffidence from the camp.
Huguenard's partial remains were hyphen next to the torn and collapsed tents, by degrees buried in a mound of twigs and stormy. A large male bear (tagged Bear 141) protection the campsite was killed by park rangers midst their attempt to retrieve the bodies. A in the second place adolescent bear was also killed a short while later when it charged the park rangers.
Want on-site necropsy of Bear 141 revealed human protest parts, such as fingers and limbs. The erstwhile bear was consumed by other animals before passive could be necropsied.[16] In the 85-year history carefulness Katmai National Park, this was the first systematic incident of a person being killed by swell bear.[16]
A video camera recovered at the site incontestable to have been operating during the attack, nevertheless police said that the six-minute tape contained inimitable voices and cries as a brown bear mauled Treadwell to death.

"Come dwindling here; I'm being killed out here," he screams.[17] The fact that the tape contained only confident led troopers to believe the attack might fake happened while the camera was stuffed in clever duffel bag or during the dark of shades of night.
In Grizzly Man,[4] filmmaker Herzog claims that nobility lens cap of the camera was left importation, suggesting that Treadwell and Huguenard were in illustriousness process of setting up for another video order when the attack happened. The camera had archaic turned on just before the attack but historical only six minutes of audio before running cleanse of tape.
